How to create a custom template in BricsCAD

How to create a custom template in BricsCAD

BricsCAD has many options to customise how the space looks, feels and behaves. All these options can be changed and then saved as your own custom template that is ready to go every time you need it.

We will cover how to change a few basic settings, how to save it as a temple and open that template for use.

Units

To start creating your own template first choose one of the existing, this will get your unit of measurement. It is important to choose right as changing this is a bit more tricky later down the line. If the option you want isn’t in your given list on the welcome screen select ‘More..’ and choose the one you’re after.

Points

The next is the style and sizing of your points. The easiest way to change this is to run the POINT command and then go to the settings.

Here there are a few options to play with,
  1. Mask changes the line style on your points
  2. 32 adds a circle to your point
  3. 64 adds a square to the point
Using these few options you can create up to 20 styles as shown here

If you'd like to change the size of the points use command PDSIZE or in the settings change the 'Point display size'.

Dimension Style

Next we will cover DIMSTYLE, this will control how your dimensions will look.

There are a number of options to go over here so if you are new to BricsCAD take some time to play with the different options, see what they change and what you like.

There is also a small preview which will help show what you are changing or you can hover over each item to get a short description of what it’s changing. While not everything is updated in the preview it can help show some changes like arrow type.

To the left of the Drawing Explorer also shows the other options you are able to change, some noteworthy ones include Visual Styles, Line type and layers.

Saving

Now you have made all the changes you need, it’s time to save the file ready for next time.
First save the blank file with all your changes as a DWT in the default template folder found in the below locations (usually the last option on the list of save options). You can save wherever you’d like however we found some issues opening the template when this is done so it is best to save here.

Note: You may want to find the location on your machine first using the folders/finder outside of the application to make the process easier when saving.

MAC - Users/YourUsername/*Library*/Application Support/Bricsys/BricsCAD/Version/en_US/Templates/
**Library is hidden, press Command Shift . (full stop/period) to unhide it.

Windows - Users > Your Username > *App Data* > Local > Bricsys > BricsCAD > Version > en_US > Templates
**App Data is hidden, to unhide press View > Show > Hidden Items (Windows 11 only)

Once saved, close BricsCAD and then reopen BricsCAD. The first time you go to use the template you will need to go to ‘More…’ and select the template.
There will also be an option to set this as the new default template which you can tick if you’d like. This just means when you click ‘New drawing’ instead of the last used template it will be this new, custom one.

The next time you go to open BricsCAD you will see your new template in the list of last used templates making the process a little easier.
