What is Chaos Cloud Licence

Chaos Cloud Licensing Explained

In 2025 Chaos introduced Cloud Licensing, this is designed to move away from the traditional Licence server. At the time of writing, there is no plans to remove the licence server, however this way of licensing is simpler and designed to have less issues so this may change in the future. You are also given the choice upon install to stay on the licence server or switch but this can also be done (and reversed) at any point.

Over the course of 2026 and beyond this will roll out to the rest of the Chaos suite as currently only Corona and Vantage have this feature.

How does it work?

The original licence server is installed alongside your Chaos product and is the key to connecting your licence to the software. This historically has lead to issues with accounts, permissions, firewalls and install errors, so this change aims to reduce some of that.

Instead when you open your Chaos product you are met with a login screen, simply log into the account that holds your licence and away you go, a direct link from software to licence.

FAQs

What version of my software is affected?
And new releases for software will be moving onto this system, if you use a version from 2025 or before you must use the licence server as before. Which as mentioned will stay supported, active and available for any and all subscribed users. You can have new versions running Cloud systems as well as older versions or other software using the Licence server.

How does cloud licensing affect Named Users vs Floating users?
This remains unaffected as once you log in the licence is picked up through the cloud either as being a named user or checked out from the pool of licences. For more information on Named vs Floating licences, check out our article here.

What if my internet drops out during work?
If you are already signed in, then the cloud licensing system allows 'several hours' without interruption.

Can I use Cloud Licensing if I am offline?
If you plan on being away from an internet connection then you can still borrow a licence through the traditional licence server but the cloud licence does not currently have a method for planned outage. If you are on a train, for example, and will be in and out of internet range then load Chaos before you set off, connect to the cloud and those interruptions will not be an issue to the serval hours or grace Chaos give.
