With any SketchUp release users are urged to make the switch to the latest and greatest version however some users like to stay as they have all their plugins, templates and materials set up and saved. However SketchUp have made improvements when switching to a new version and below is our guide to help the switch go as smoothly as possible.
Plugins
To transfer plugins you may be asked on the first start up of the new version of SketchUp. If you agree to that and follow the onscreen prompts, that's all you need.
If you didn't agree at the time then you can go to Extensions -> Migrate Extensions... and follow the onscreen prompts for which version you'd like to take from.
Note: Other plugins like Enscape and V-Ray (or those that have a dedicated installer rather than a .rbz file) will not be transferred using this method and instead you will need to install these again for the new SketchUp version
Materials, Components and Styles
If you'd like to transfer any of these across then you will need to head into the files and copy them from the current version location to the new version. For this example we will use 2025 to 2026 and they will be in the default locations, if you saved elsewhere, then locate the files there and move them to the default location in the new version or change the location SketchUp looks for these files within the settings.
Mac
First find the older version location - /Users/Username/Library/Application Support/SketchUp 2025/SketchUp/all three folders are located in this same location
Then copy them across to the same location just SketchUp 2026 instead.
Notes
- Do not uninstall/delete the older versions/folders for at least a few weeks for a general rule of thumb.
- The library folder is hidden, press Command, Shift, . (Full/stop period) to show the hidden folders.
Windows
First find the folder location Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2025\All three folders will be found here
Then copy them across to the same location just SketchUp 2026 instead
Notes
- Do not uninstall/delete the older versions/folders for at least a few weeks for a general rule of thumb.
- The AppData folder is hidden, in the file explorer click View > Show > Hidden Items
Templates
To copy across templates the easiest way is to go to the below path and copy the folder across similar to your materials and styles.
- Mac - /Users/Username/Library/Application Support/SketchUp 2025/SketchUp/
- Windows - Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2025\
The other, more tedious, method is to open the templates one by one and resave them as a template once again. This is fine and works the same however if you have a few templates it soon becomes very tedious and time consuming.
Other
Unfortunately transferring toolbar locations and user settings is still not an option. Take some time when switching to set yourself up once again and maybe clear out some tools/plugins you no longer need to things light and running smoothly.
There isn't any other settings or features to be copied over however if you think something should be added or you want to move something specific across please get in contact and we can provide more bespoke support.
