Chaos V-Ray Error - 496: License Communication Initialization Error

When users receive this error they are also told a file is missing, vrlclient.xml. This is a key file in telling Chaos about your machine in order to connect to the server and run your licence.

To get this file back the simplest method is to reinstall the V-Ray application, this should resolve the issue and install the file once again during set up. If you are on Windows ensure to right-click and 'Run as administrator'.

However if that fails then follow the path below to run the specific command which will generate your file.
The path does change slightly depending on the host software but for this article we will focus on SketchUp. If using another host application please contact the support team for more guidance.

Mac:
Applications > Chaos > V-Ray > V-Ray for SketchUp > Extension > vray > bin > setvrlservice
When you run this service there are a few options but for this we need to ensure Licensing mode is Licence Server and then everything else can be default. This should regenerate the missing file and resolve the error.

Windows:
C Drive > Program Files > Chaos > V-ray > V-Ray for SketchUp > Extension > vray > bin > setvrlservice
The option box is slightly different on Windows and can be left as default and press OK to generate the file.
